The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (the CLHIA) is the trusted voice of Canada’s life and health insurers. The CLHIA is a not-for-profit, membership-based organization representing 99% of Canada’s life and health insurance companies. The CLHIA works alongside its members to advance public policy solutions that support a strong and sustainable life and health insurance sector, helping Canadians achieve greater financial security and access to valuable supplementary health benefits. CLHIA’s member companies help Canadians protect themselves and their families against the financial risks associated with premature death, illness, and retirement through a wide range of products and services, underscoring CLHIA’s central role in advancing a stable, trusted, and well-functioning life and health insurance system for all Canadians.

Reporting to the Vice President, Risk and Chief Actuary, the Assistant Vice President, Risk provides leadership in advancing the life and health insurance industry’s interests on risk-related matters. Working closely with CLHIA’s member companies, regulators, and industry stakeholders, the AVP leads the development and execution of strategies related to enterprise risk management, operational risk, emerging risks, regulatory developments, and industry policy. The role serves as a primary point of contact for risk-related engagement with regulators and industry partners, while providing leadership to key committees and working groups that help shape industry positions and responses. Operating in a highly collaborative environment, the AVP navigates complex and often ambiguous issues, balancing diverse member perspectives and priorities to build consensus and advance common objectives. Success in this role will be grounded in strong technical expertise, stakeholder management, sound judgment, and the ability to foster alignment across a sophisticated membership.

As the ideal candidate, you are a collaborative and highly credible risk leader with demonstrated experience in the life and health insurance sector, ideally with exposure to non-financial risk, or within the broader insurance, financial services, or regulatory landscape. You possess strong knowledge of risk management frameworks, regulatory policy, and emerging industry trends, coupled with the ability to translate complex issues into clear advice and practical action. Equally important, you bring the emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and relationship-building skills required to work effectively across organizations with varying priorities and perspectives. You are skilled at building consensus, navigating competing interests, and influencing outcomes without direct authority.

Your leadership style is consultative, thoughtful, and solutions-oriented, grounded in accountability, transparency, fairness, and respect for differing viewpoints. You have a proven track record of leading committees, working groups, or cross-functional initiatives, and are comfortable operating in ambiguity where success depends as much on sound judgment and stakeholder engagement as technical expertise. As a strong communicator and trusted advisor, you combine credibility with humility, curiosity, and a calm, methodical approach, positioning you to contribute meaningfully to the continued success and influence of the CLHIA.
