Letter to Ontario Ministry of Finance Regarding the Use of Electronic Communications in the Insurance Sector

The Ontario Ministry of Finance launched a consultation on modernizing the Insurance Act by permitting the use of electronic communications in the insurance sector. The industry submitted a letter in response to the consultation. The letter indicated that recent amendments to the Act generally removed barriers for the use of electronic communications. However, we recommended two areas where additional changes are needed, including:

1. To permit the use of electronic communication for notice of insurance termination.
2. To permit the use of electronic communications for variable insurance contracts.
