Submission to the Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services on Modernizing Privacy in Ontario
Release Date: 09/07/2021 Staff Reference: Sarah Hobbs; Anny DuvalThe CLHIA provided its comments to the Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services on its white paper entitled Modernizing Privacy in Ontario: Empowering Ontarians and Enabling the Digital Economy. In the submission, the industry stressed the need for private sector privacy legislation to be harmonized across Canada. The industry believes that a new privacy framework in Ontario is not needed and instead, it is essential to ensure that modernization is coordinated with the federal government’s framework for privacy. However, we noted that should the province decide to introduce its own privacy legislation, we recommended that the province focus on those areas not captured by federal legislation.
