The Position:

Reporting to the Director, Government Relations, the Government Relations Advisor is responsible for supporting the advocacy goals of the Association and its members through monitoring and tracking relevant policies and legislation and communicating directly to key policy makers to advance advocacy goals.

What you will be working on:

A. Government Monitoring

  • Track daily Federal-Provincial-Territorial legislative and regulatory developments and disseminate to subject specialists. Use RSS feeds and check bookmarked government and media sites directly.
  • Track Parliamentary and provincial/territorial proceedings during sittings; follow Question Period and Committee hearings for developments and work schedules. Track executive and parliamentary assignments.
  • Write summaries of general elections, throne speeches and budgets for the Government Relations Committee and CLHIA staff. Follow party platforms during elections and provide regular updates.
  • Write the monthly Government Monitoring Report and disseminate to its subscription base.
  • Brief CLHIA’s Government Relations committee on a bi-weekly basis by preparing verbal or written reports on key legislation.

B. Lobbyist Registration
  • Manage compliance with all lobby registration rules federally and in each province.
  • File registrations for all jurisdictions requiring registration updates.
  • Ensure staff and subject information is current and reflects CLHIA’s activities in those jurisdictions.
  • Collect meeting details for monthly federal lobbying communications reports, and ensure they are filed by the 15th of each month.

C. Advocacy
  • Provide support, as needed, for federal and provincial outreach events.
  • Support the Director, Government Relations in seeking and securing meetings with elected officials federally and provincially.
  • Help manage lists of stakeholders and parliamentarians, and write biographical notes as needed for briefing materials.
  • Be available to provide any additional support at meetings and events.
  • Participate in the preparation and implementation of advocacy plans for key files.

D. Office Administrative Duties
  • General administrative duties may include getting mail, interacting with building security and maintenance.
  • Monitoring and ordering office supplies as needed.

What you will bring:
  • University degree in Political Science, Communications or a related discipline
  • 2-5 years relevant experience working within a political office, an association or public service in communications or policy
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office 365
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively multi-task, establish priorities and ensure constantly changing deadlines are met.
  • Bilingual (French/English) an asset
