Re: The Government of Manitoba Proposed Accessibility Standard for Customer Service
We are pleased to provide our input into the draft Customer Service Standard (the “Standard”) under The Accessibility for Manitobans Act (the “Act”). The Canadian life and health insurance industry provides products which include individual and group life insurance, disability insurance, supplementary health insurance, individual and group annuities (including RRSPs, RRIFs, TFSAs) and pensions. The industry protects about 1 million Manitobans. It makes benefit payments to Manitobans of $2.2 billion a year, has almost $19 billion invested in Manitoba’s economy and employs about 7,100 people.
As indicated in our submission of July 15, 2014 on the Discussion Paper on an Initial Proposed Customer Service Standard, we commend Manitoba for recognizing the value in aligning its accessibility standards with those of other jurisdictions. This, as well as the decision to provide businesses with a reasonable implementation period, will assist Manitoba businesses in being able to fully comply with the new requirements by the dates specified in the Standard.
