On behalf of the Canadian life and health insurance industry, we are writing to provide insurance industry’s input into the work undertaken by the WorkSafe New Brunswick Task Force. The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association is a voluntary association with member companies which account for 99 per cent of Canada’s life and health insurance business. In New Brunswick, for calendar year 2016, the life and health insurance industry provided disability coverage for approximately 190,000 residents. These plans help ensure New Brunswickers have access to needed health care. In providing disability benefits, the insurance industry integrates with WorkSafe New Brunswick. Our comments into the work of the Task Force relate to the intersection of private – government benefits.

In 2013, our organization had a brief interaction with WorkSafe New Brunswick. At the time, private insurers offered suggestions on changes that could better protect employers as well as offer increased access to services for plan members. I attach a copy of our submission to you at that time. The information remains relevant today and could serve as an important input to your review process.

There are many decisions that the WorkSafe New Brunswick must make as you consider your approach to provide fairer compensation to employees, yet at the same time, minimize the potential impact on employers. CLHIA and industry members would suggest that our involvement as a direct stakeholder to those changes would be beneficial to all.
